DevOps Barcelona 2023 has been a pivotal event for the industry, bringing together innovators, thought leaders, and experts from around the world to discuss the latest trends, share valuable insights, and foster collaboration in the DevOps community. Join us to discover more about our participation in DevOps Barcelona 2023.
That is why we were happy and proud to be a sponsor of this conference, and we sent some Criteos from our office in BCN. Our booth was full of goodies! Thanks to everyone who shared time with us in the booth and participated in our quizzes. We really enjoyed our time there and had lots of fun!

Takeaways from Criteos
Our team had the opportunity to meet experts on diverse topics, share knowledge, and learn from other developers. Whether you could attend the event or not, this blog post offers a retrospective look into the conference with valuable key learnings.
The talk that impacted our Criteos the most
Some of our Criteos highlighted the talk from Thijs Feryn, “Distributed load testing with k6”, as the more relevant to them.

Thanks to that talk, Pavlo realized we could improve performance testing for critical applications. As part of a team responsible for receiving advertiser events with about 800 running instances, we need to bring this topic to the table and discuss with the SRE team how to use the latest tools.
For Marina, Thijs made clear the main advantages: how convenient the setup is, easy interaction, and highly flexible (as well as the infinite options for customization) courtesy of its built-in JavaScript engine. Thijs showcased the power of defining testing scenarios in k6 using JavaScript, setting checks for expected behavior, and customizing thresholds to suit specific needs. She can’t wait to play with it, connecting the testing metrics to Grafana.
Xavier T’s highlights
Alex Soto is a great speaker who presented some tricks about managing secrets in a Kubernetes cluster in a very engaging conference called “Securing Secrets in the GitOps era”.

The talk not only covered theoretical ideas but included some hands-on examples as well. I found the discussion about where to store keys and secrets, the KMS plugin, etc., especially interesting. Storing them in different machines can help avoid data leaking in case one of the servers is compromised, but it adds a layer of complexity that must be addressed in each case.
Pavlo’s notes

I also want to highlight the presentation “One platform and multiple clusters, teams and countries. The Allianz case“ because it was partially similar to the app setup at Criteo, where everything has to be scaled and automated as much as possible. It might be interesting to organize a meetup together and discuss the different approaches. It could raise interesting discussions.
Julian’s key points
I found the talk “Open Policy Agent: security for cloud natives and everyone else” from Philipp Krenn really impressive. He already presented last year about Elastic Search, and I was especially interested in the OPA talk this year since it’s very relevant to our team. We are looking at the moment how to improve our authorization system and are considering OPA. He gave an excellent overview of how OPA works and how to implement it.

What I found especially interesting was watching the different styles of speakers and how different the presentations can be. Some had more text-based slides, and others were more free-flowing, using charts and diagrams. It was also interesting how the speakers’ personalities shined through, and I saw different styles and ways of giving a talk.
At our booth, people were quite interested in learning about Criteo, and I had a lot of good conversations. It was also very nice to talk to the other representatives of companies at the conference and to get to know more about them and their solutions.
Our experience at DevOps Barcelona 2023 has come to an end, and it’s safe to say that it was a huge success. The event was full of insightful conversations, innovative solutions, and valuable connections that have helped us move forward in our DevOps journey with renewed energy.
DevOps Barcelona has once again demonstrated its significance as a platform for transformation, collaboration, and inspiration in the field of technology and software development. We feel fortunate to have been part of such a vibrant community and to have contributed to the collective knowledge and passion that drives our industry.

As we say goodbye to this year’s event, we look forward to the future with excitement. DevOps Barcelona 2023 was a stepping stone toward more significant innovation and excellence in our field, and we can’t wait to see where the journey takes us next.
Until we meet again at DevOps Barcelona 2024, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the organizers, speakers, and all the amazing individuals who made this event a resounding success. Stay tuned for more discoveries, insights, and innovations as we continue to unlock the future of DevOps together.
We’ll see you next year!
